Situated north of Gatwick airport, about 24 miles away, and a 35-minute taxi ride through the M23 and M25, the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames is a southwest London area with a population of 160,400 as recorded in 2011.

It was primarily an agricultural community, raising sheep for their wool and fishing for salmon in the Thames.
